Matthew’s main coverage focus is on federal and state higher education policy. This includes the oversight of college accreditation agencies across the U.S. and changes to the regulations that oversee accreditors.

His coverage also includes reporting on new and aspiring accreditation agencies. He has written about the establishment of the Inclusive Higher Education Accreditation Council (IHEAC) and the Postsecondary Commission (PSC). He also covered the negotiated rulemaking process in 2024 that proposed changes to the standards to which accreditors must hold institutions and programs accountable.
